Description: Golden Slipper is a senior center housed in a senior residence in the City Line area of Philadelphia. Tutors work in small groups or one-on-one with mostly Russian or former Soviet Union learners. Tutors at this site will be able to set their own schedules at the beginning of the semester. During senior center hours, tutoring takes place in the large multi-purpose room/cafeteria, where occasionally other activities are taking place. On the weekends and at night, tutoring takes place in residents’ apartments in the building. The Russian Advisor contacts the learners, sets up the groups, and monitors the tutoring. Most of the learners live on-site so it is extremely convenient for them and learner attendance is very consistent. Lutheran Children and Family Services sponsor other ESL classes that are held at the center.
Other Services and Activities Offered at Site: Daily meal program; social events; educational programs, ESL classes administered by Lutheran Children and Family Services
Public Transportation from Temple University: Take the C bus or Broad St. subway south to City Hall. Walk to 15th and JFK to get the 38 Bus (west). This is a long bus ride but start paying attention after the bus turns on to Conshohocken Ave. from Ford Road. After turning onto Conshohocken Rd. look for Green Briar Apartments about ¼ mile down the road. It is a large apartment complex on the left, and there is a sign that says “Golden Slipper.”
Or
Take the free Presidential City shuttle from 12th St. on the side of Paley library. Get off the shuttle at Presidential City. Walk straight out through security gates at entrance of complex and cross street to #38 Bus stop (at telephone pole). After the bus turns onto Conshohocken Ave. from Presidential Road, look for Green Briar Apts. on your right. The bus should stop right after the apartments.
Driving: Take Route 76 to the City Ave. exit. Turn right at first light coming off exit and get in the left lane immediately to make a left in front of TGI Friday’s. After making the left go straight until Conshohocken Rd. and turn right. Continue just past a small strip mall on the right. Just after the mall you will see on the right the Greenbriar Apartments.
When you enter the apartment complex, keep to the left. Continue through the gate, over yellow speed bumps, until you see the tall apartment building on the left called the Pavilion. There is parking on the left just before the Pavilion.
If you are tutoring during senior center hours: To enter the building, ring the security phone for the Golden Slipper Senior Center. When you are buzzed in, walk through the lobby to the stairs, and go down to the basement. Exit the stairs to your left, and enter the main dining room, where you will find the contact people. Lessons will generally take place in and around this dining area.
If you
are tutoring at night or on the weekend: Dial your learner’s number from the
security phone, and they will let you in.
